A unicorn startup, or unicorn company, is a private company with a valuation of $1 billion or more. In August 2019 when we compiled a list of the world’s unicorn startups, there were 360 unicorns in the world. In 2020, the number of unicorn startups surpassed 500 for the first time with a cumulative valuation of approx. $1.585 trillion.
Fast-forward to October 2022, there are over 1,200 unicorns around the world with a cumulative valuation of $3.858 trillion. Popular former unicorns include Airbnb, Google, Facebook’s Meta, and Twitter. Variants of unicorns include a decacorn, valued at over $10 billion, and a hectocorn, valued at over $100 billion.
