Introducing the VS Code Extension for Dremio

Many data engineers and data analysts spend much of their day in Visual Studio (VS) Code, writing SQL, testing queries, and working with data. Constantly switching between tools disrupts productivity and the user work flow. The VS Code extension for Dremio brings the power of the agentic lakehouse directly into your development environment, enabling you to discover, explore, develop SQL, analyze data with natural language, and see query results without leaving your editor. Whether you’re a data engineer building pipelines and an Agentic AI workflow, or a data analyst refining queries and exploring datasets, this extension makes working with data easier and streamlines your workflow.

With the extension, you can browse catalogs, write and run SQL, and use AI-powered data discovery, ask questions of your data, write SQL using natural language through the built-in integration with Microsoft Copilot.

Work with Data Without Leaving VS Code

The extension combines three tightly connected capabilities—catalog navigator, SQL development, and query results—into a single streamlined workflow. It’s designed to be intuitive, fast to set up, and effortless to use.

  • Explore your catalog: Browse datasets across the Dremio Catalog, spaces, and connected sources through a clear tree-style view.
  • Develop SQL: Write queries with autocomplete, syntax highlighting, formatting, and full respect for Dremio routing rules.
  • See results instantly: Run queries and view outputs in an integrated results table without switching to another UI.

Together, these features create a smooth, end-to-end experience for discovering data, writing queries, and validating outcomes—all from VS Code.

AI at the Core: Microsoft Copilot Integration

What sets this extension apart is the built-in Microsoft Copilot integration, powered by Dremio’s REST APIs. With Copilot, you can:

  • Discover datasets in Dremio using natural-language and semantic matching using prompts like “which dataset contains the account owners information?”, which would return the path for the Customer dataset.
  • Generate SQL queries from prompts like “Write me SQL that calculates average revenue per user by region” or “Write me a SQL to list the distinct active bank accounts per region.”
  • Ask data questions using natural-language such as “What’s the year-over-year growth in sales?”

The integration for Copilot requires no additional setup and works immediately by connecting Copilot (or other AI agents) directly to Dremio’s semantic layer for unified, AI-ready insights with sub-second performance. For new users, it lowers the barrier to analytics. For experts, it accelerates exploration and boosts productivity—all with the ease of natural language.
